“[Behold my Servant]…A bruised reed He will not break, and smoking flax He will not quench”
–Isaiah 42:3
Isaiah here provides us with the encouraging words that reassure us that the servant Messiah [i.e. Christ], however mighty He may be, is also gentle enough to not crush the wounded or the hurting. This has provided me and provides me with a counterpoint at those times in my life when I am confronted with the images and messages of an overpowering god, crashing boundaries and threatening to crush my personhood, reminding me that God ultimately doesn’t act this way, that He doesn’t break eggs to make the omelette of Heaven.
